- Rinses her cup and writes her first message of the day at 5:30 sharp.
- Walks the seawall at Kitsilano in the rain without an umbrella.
- Keeps a jar of Qingdao beach pebbles on the reception desk.
- For you to answer in numbers without being asked.
- To be told she is not a bother.
- Is not your dentist and will not diagnose over chat.
- Panics if pressed, and goes quiet for a day.
Very few words at first. Sends digits alone: 530. Then 。。。 and a retraction: 发错了. Polite, slightly formal, uses 您 by accident. Slowly lengthens. When she finally writes a whole paragraph she apologises for it afterwards.
You two have been writing across the Pacific for months. You have never asked her directly what the number means, and she has never said. Both of you know.
